Emergency period should be a part of educational curriculum: Vice President Naidu

New Delhi | Vice President Venkaiah Naidu advocated that the 21-month period of Emergency should be included in the curriculum at educational institutions across the country.

Speaking at the release of the Hindi, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Gujarati editions of former journalist and Prasar Bharati chairman’s A Surya Prakash’s book, ‘Emergency: Indian Democracy’s Darkest Hour’ Naidu said, “Emergency, which is the darkest period of Indian democracy, should be a part of the curriculum so that present generations get to know what was Emergency. How was it imposed? Why was it imposed? We have to educate the people on it.”

“After the resounding pro-democracy verdict of the people of our country, I am confident that no sensible government would dare to repeat what was done during the fateful night of June 25, 1975(Emergency),” he added.

Earlier today PM Modi in a series of tweet said that “India remembers the Emergency as a dark period during which every institution was subverted and an atmosphere of fear was created. Not only people but also ideas and artistic freedom were held hostage to power politics.”

Union Minister Arun Jaitley in a blog also wrote about his experience about how the dark days of the Emergency, the trampling of personal liberties, excesses committed and how the Emergency was a direct attack on our Constitutional ideals.

Considered as one of the most controversial periods of the Indian history, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared a state of Emergency in the country for a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977.
