‘EPS Vs OPS’; AIADMK’s Leadership Clash Reaches Supreme Court

The Court was hearing a plea by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and headquarters secretary of the AIADMK, Edappadi K Palaniswamy challenging the Madras High Court order.

The Madras High Court will hear a plea on Wednesday by AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam (or OPS) seeking to challenge a Madras high court order restraining the AIADMK General Council from amending the party’s by-laws during its meeting.

EPS wants to do away with the dual leadership that he shares with OPS , bringing back the post of one supreme General Secretary by amending the laws through the General Council, the prime decision-making body of the party. In a fallout of the single leadership demand in the party, the dominant EPS faction has said Panneerselvam ceased to be the coordinator and Palaniswami the joint coordinator following the June 23 general council meet.

OPS wants the present system to continue and had already gone to the High Court, which on June 23 ordered a halt on the meeting or any “unannounced” resolutions. That halt was yesterday removed by the Supreme Court, effectively allowing the meeting.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed a Madras high court order that last month restrained All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)’s General Council from adopting a resolution to end the party’s dual leadership. It allowed the council to go ahead with its July 11 meeting where the leadership issue is to be discussed.

In its interim order, the Supreme Court asked the OPS faction to make its submissions in two weeks. Now, OPS will hope for relief again from the High Court as he has sought to stop the July 11 meeting from taking place altogether.
