“Everything is shut, nothing is normal”: Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Kashmir

During his recent visit to Mumbai, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami talked to HW News exclusively and shared his experiences post-abrogation of 370 and his views on CAA.

Mumbai| Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Indian politician and the Communist Party of India Jammu and Kashmir state committee secretary, a four-time legislator from Kulgam in South Kashmir, had been under virtual house arrest in Srinagar though the administration claims otherwise.

When asked about the situation in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370, he said everything is quiet. “This is very hurtful to Kashmiris because Kashmiris built a relationship with Secular India, even though Pak tried to join Kashmir with them. But Kashmir under Mr Sheikh choseSecular India over Pakistan and there were negotiations and Article 370 was made. It was decided that J&K was given a right to elect their Constituent Assembly and make their own Constitution,” Mohammad said.

“This Constitution was not adopted from Pakistan, it was made in the presence of Constituent Assembly of India. After considering the unique situation of Kashmir at that moment, the J&K leaders negotiated with Union leaders of India and made a pact,” he added.

“What happened on 5th August broke this pact and breaching this pact means destroying the foundation on which the relationship was built. The Government of India revoked Article 370 unilaterally, without voting in J&K, without the presence of Constituent Assembly, without negotiating with J&K political leaders. This is an assault, not just on Jammu and Kashmir but also on the Constitution of India. The communal agenda which is being imposed will also weaken the Constitution of India,” Mohammad said.

With regards to CAA, he said, “The fact that a person irrespective of their religion can take Citizenship in India is one of our biggest strengths. They started twisting the Constitution of India by revoking Section 370 and now the next step is the unconstitutional CAA.

“Nothing is normal. 2G internet is also not accessible and a huge number of people are still in preventive custody. It feels like martian law is imposed,” he said on the situation in Kashmir.

“36 Union Minister visited Jammu and Kashmir area but did nothing meaningful. Education, agriculture are in its worst condition,” Mohammad expressed his displeasure.

“The CAA will create an atmosphere which will divide the people of the country, which should not happen. When a persecuted person comes, we must not ask them their religion in order to give citizenship”.

“The arguments from BJP minister are full of hatred, how can these people run the Nation? The discussion in poll rallies should be about the development of the country, provoking communal passion cannot win votes. Communalism will weaken India.”
