What is the case about?

The case has been filed against the Congress and JD(S) leaders in connection with their protest against Income Tax raids during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The case relates to protests near the I-T office here by the leaders including the then Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy against the Income Tax raids at the residence of Congress and JD(S) leaders.

The charges are that Kumaraswamy had informed the public about the possible raids after getting inputs about the action.

Kumaraswamy had said to media on March 27 that there was every likelihood of raids as a large number of central security forces had arrived at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

The prominent leaders such as Kumaraswamy, joined by his deputy CM Parameshwara, former chief minister Siddaramaiah, ministers in the coalition government, MPs and other legislators of the ruling parties had staged a protest in front of the I-T office on Queen’s Road on March 27, which he claimed was a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

In his complaint, he also stated that the leaders raised slogans against I-T officials saying they were “BJP agents”, which he stated amounted to obstruction of duty.

Congress leader DK Shivakumar reacting to the sedition charges said all the cases were politically motivated and he will fight it politically.

Shivakumar said “We did not enter the income tax office. We stood 150 meters away and raised slogans,”.
