“First promote your mother tongue”, says Vice President Venkaiah Naidu

“Learning Hindi, Bengali, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or even French, Chinese, no problem, first promote your mother tongue,” said Venkaiah Naidu.

 

New Delhi| Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said that people can learn other languages but first they should promote their mother tongues. He further said that government schools and educational institutes must promote mother tongue up to primary level. He was speaking at an event organized to celebrate 100 years completion of news daily in Odisha.

He said, “Mother tongue is very important as it came from mother’s womb, bhasha aur bhawna ek sath chalte hain. Learn your mother tongue, promote it, & learn other languages too.” He further added that there is no problem in learning other languages. “Learning Hindi, Bengali, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or even French, Chinese, no problem, first promote your mother tongue, that’s what is required,” Naidu said.

Naidu’s statement comes at a time when the debate over language is raging in India. Tamil Nadu has been fiercely protesting Amit Shah’s call for making Hindi the national language.

Media shouldn’t run after TRPs:

Citing the role of media is important in Democracy, Naidu said, that competition,& temptation for TRPs, should not propel media should into sensationalization. He said, “There has to be a sense in what you propagate. Media should introspect seriously & see to it that they all adhere to standards.”

Talking about the menace of Fake and Paid news, Naidu said that media has an important role to play in a democracy. He further added that instances of fake & paid news, are disturbing. “Few people are bringing a bad name to journalistic community. I would like to caution everybody to see that we live by our value system & ethics,” Venkaiah Naidu mentioned.
