New Delhi | Ex Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has officially joined the Bhartiya Janata Party today, weeks before the Lok Sabha elections.
After repeatedly refusing the prospect of contesting elections, he has on Friday joined the party, marking his entry into politics.
“I am joining this party(BJP) after getting influenced by PM Narendra Modi’s vision. I am honoured to get the opportunity to join this platform”, he said at the event.
He joined the party in the presence of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
“We continue to be a cadre-based party and are expanding as a mass cadre-based party. Gautam Gambhir is a Delhi boy. He was born here and grown up here. The party will benefit from this joining”, said FM Arun Jaitley.
There is speculation that he will contest one of the seats in Delhi in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The former opening batsman was conferred with India’s fourth highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri award, earlier this year and received a congratulatory letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
