New Delhi | Amid speculation over the resignation of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, 1975 Hockey World Cup winner and former minister Aslam Khan has offered to take over the position of the Congress party chief for 2 years.
As reported by News Agency ANI, Khan was quoted saying,” “I wrote the letter when Rahul Gandhi offered to leave the post of Congress President and asked someone from outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to take over his role. In the letter, I mentioned that if Rahul (Gandhi) wanted to continue at the post he very well could, but if not, then I would like to assume the responsibility for two years.”
Denying any kind of personal gain through the letter, the former Olympian said that his intention is just to ensure the makeover of the party. He said,” The letter was not written for personal gains. It is because I believe Congress needs a makeover and it needs to be realigned with the nationalist identity. It is because of these reasons that I became ready to assume the responsibilities when the party is going through tough times.”
Calling for a change in leadership, Khan also stated that if the party finds any suitable candidate rather than him he should be given the role. Aslam Sher Khan is the first leader who he wished to take over the post of Congress party after Rahul Gandhi in the CWC meeting after the Lok Sabha election tendered his resignation from the post taking moral responsibility of the loss in the 2019 general elections.
Aslam Sher Khan is a former Olympian and Hockey player who helped Indian to win the gold medal in 1975 Wolrd Cup. A two-time Member of Parliament and Union Minister Khan has also joined Congress rival BJP in 1997 but resigned in 1999.
