Former PM Manmohan Singh to attend Kartarpur inauguration event

Manmohan Singh will also attend the main event at Sultanpur Lodhi to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th Prakash Purab. However, not on Pakistan’s invitation.

New Delhi| Days after Pakistan invited the former Prime Minister of India for the inauguration of the Kartarpur corridor, Dr Manmohan Singh will be attending the ceremony. Reportedly, he will join the first batch of pilgrims to walk through the newly built Kartarpur corridor. Manmohan Singh will also attend the main event at Sultanpur Lodhi to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th Prakash Purab. However, not on Pakistan’s invitation.

Earlier, Punjab CM Capt. Amarinder Singh had visited the former Prime Minister and had invited him to join the Jatha (Batch).

Last week, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had released a video and said that he would call former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh at the inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor. However, Congress sources say that Manmohan will not accept the invitation. He said that Singh also represents the Sikh community. The Kartarpur Corridor is to be opened on 9 November.

Significantly, the Corridor is one of the holy places for Sikhs. This is because the Sikh religious leader, Guru Nanak, spent 17 years, 7 months and 9 days of his life here. He settled there with the family and his parents also died here. From the Indian side, devotees stand on the border and see it through binoculars. Last year, the Kartarpur corridor came into the limelight when its path was prepared for the Sikhs. According to Pakistan, centres have been established here for the arrival of 5000 Sikh travellers from India.
