UP govt announces financial aid to kin of IAF men killed in JK chopper crash

Lucknow | Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday announced financial assistance to the kin of the IAF personnel from the state who lost their lives in the Mi-17 helicopter crash in Budgam.

A statement issued by the state government said Rs 25 lakh each has been announced for the family members of Deepak Pandey, Pankaj Singh and Vishal Kumar Pandey — the Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel who lost their lives in the crash.

A road will also be named in the memory of the IAF personnel in their native districts, it said.

An IAF helicopter crashed in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, killing both its pilots and four others onboard besides a local resident, officials said.

The helicopter crashed in an open field near Garend Kalaan village in Budgam around 10.05 am, they said, adding seven bodies have been recovered from the scene.

Besides the pilots, an operator and three other crew members lost their lives in the crash, the officials said.

The local resident was identified as Kifayat Hussain Ganaie, they added.

New Delhi | Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting on security amid the heightened tensions with Pakistan and after Imran Khan announced the release of an Indian Air Force pilot captured by his country.

Officials sources said the meeting was attended by chiefs of the three Services, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Several other senior officials also attended the meeting held at the prime minister’s residence here.

An IAF pilot was captured by Pakistan after an air combat on Wednesday during which the two sides said they shot down each other’s warplanes that followed an unsuccessful attempt to target Indian military installations in retaliatory strikes that sparked fears of war.

Khan,on Thursday announced that IAF’s captured pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, will be released on Friday as a gesture of peace and the “first step” to open negotiations with India.
