Govt drops last remaining Congress leaders from Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society

TV journalist Rajat Sharma, BJP leader Anirban Ganguly and songwriter Prasoon Joshi replaced Congress leader on the Panel of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society.

 

New Delhi| The central government has reconstituted the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society (NMML). Some of the Congress leaders in the panel have been stripped off their membership including the former leader of opposition n Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh and Karn Singh. These three leaders have been replaced by TV journalist Rajat Sharma, BJP leader Anirban Ganguly and songwriter Prasoon Joshi.

Reacting sharply to the development, Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that everything that the Modi government does is politically motivated.

According to an order issued by the government on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the president of the society and Rajnath Singh will be its vice-president. The order states that the central government has decided to restructure the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society under NMML Memorandum of Association and Rule 3 of the Society Rules and Regulation.

Apart from the Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, State Minister for Foreign Affairs V Muralitharan, Prahlad Singh Patel, Indian Cultural Relations Council (ICCR) Chairman Vinay Sahasrabudde have been included in the society.

Prasar Bharti Chairman A Surya Prakash has also been included. Along with these, secretaries of expenditure affairs and culture and urban housing affairs have also been made members of the Society. According to the order, all these people will be members of the Society for 5 years.

The government wants to make the Nehru Memorial a museum of all the Prime Ministers

Last year, the government decided to convert the Nehru Memorial into a Center of Research. According to the plan, the museum will be built in memory of all the prime ministers. Last year, BJP leader and then Minister of Culture Mahesh Sharma also performed Bhoomipoojan for it. Journalists Arnab Goswami, S Jaishankar and Ram Bahadur Rai (chairman, Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts) were included in the panel last year.
