Hyderabad Encounter: Accused snatched weapons & attacked police, says Cyberabad CP

Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said that the police warned the accused, asking them to surrender, but they did not give in

Hyderabad: On Friday the Telangana Police said its personnel resorted to “retaliatory” firing after two of the accused in the rape and murder of a woman veterinarian opened fire at them after snatching weapons. Cyberabad Police Commissioner CV Sajjanar said that the accused named Mohammed Arif, was the first to open fire, even as the police team that took them to the crime scene were attacked with stones and sticks. The snatched weapons were in an “unlocked” position.

While addressing media Cyberabad police commissioner VC Sajjanar recounts Friday’s encounter and said “The four accused in a rape case were in police custody from the past 10 days. We had cross-examing all of them. When they admitted to the crime, our team took them to the site where the incident occurred to reconstruct the scene. When we reached the cite the accused attacked us using stones and even managed to snatch our guns. You can see that the accused are still lying there with the weapons. As a result, we had to engage in an encounter with them in which they were shot dead,” said VC Sajjanar.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said that the police warned the accused, asking them to surrender, but they did not give in. He said they had to resort to firing as the accused were not ready to surrender.

“Then we opened fire and they were killed in the encounter. During the encounter, two policemen have been injured and they have been shifted to the local hospital,” said Cyberabad police commissioner.

When questioned about raised about the timing of the encounter, Initially Cyberabad police said that the “encounter” took place at 3:30 am, Shamshabad deputy commissioner N Prakash Reddy, in an official statement, later they said, “At around 6-6.30, our persons arrived at the spot to reconstruct the scene of crime and the accused tried to snatch their weapons, and there was a cross-fire.”

A large number of people in Hyderabad on Friday expressed happiness over the encounter killing of the four accused arrested in the rape and murder of a 26-year-old victim. Some people reached the “encounter” site and congratulated the cops and raised slogans in support of them like ‘Telangana police zindabad’ and “We got justice” and said this would act as a deterrent for people from committing such crimes. Some women were seen distributing sweets to police personnel.

The Police personnel celebrated the killing of the four accused by also bursting firecrackers in other parts of the city. “It has brought peace to the soul of Disha and her family has got justice. The police have done encounters we are really happy with. It will act as a deterrent. Those want to do the crime they should fear…the police have done a very good job,” said Hyderabad resident.

The Cyberabad Police have requested the media not to telecast continuously programs on the murder of the woman and avoid the use of her actual name as it suggested the hashtag “#Justice for Disha” in the social media.
