In Lok Sabha: PM Modi announces Trust for constructing Ram Temple in Ayodhya

“The central government has taken another big step for Ram temple pilgrims. We are allocating over 67 hectares of land near the temple area to the trust

New Delhi: On Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Lok Sabha the formation of a trust for the construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya as directed by the Supreme Court in its verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi case in 2019.

PM Modi said “I am glad to announce that in the cabinet meeting, the government took significant decisions on the Ayodhya trust. According to the orders of the top Court, government has set up a trust. The Sri Ram Janma Bhumi Tirtha Shetra will be the name of the trust. It will be an independent body,”.

“The central government has taken another big step for Ram temple pilgrims. We are allocating over 67 hectares of land near the temple area to the trust. The government wants people of all religions and communities in India to thrive,” Modi added.

According to the November 9 Supreme Court judgment, the Modi government had been directed to formulate a scheme with necessary provisions for the setting up of a trust with a board of trustees or any other appropriate body, the functioning of the trust, the powers of the trustees, transfer of land to the trust and all necessary, incidental and supplemental matters.

As per the verdict, the top court had paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple by a trust at the disputed place at Ayodhya and directed the Central government to allocate an alternative 5-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a “prominent” place in the holy town in Uttar Pradesh.

The top court had said the trust should be formed within three months for the construction of the Ram temple at the place where many Hindus believe Lord Ram was born.

This big announcement, two days before Delhi votes in assembly elections followed by a communally charged campaign amid anti-CAA unrest, is likely to ruffle opposition.
