Is the BJP Accidentally Helping the Congress?

The BJP’s strategy appears straightforward: weaken regional parties, absorb their leaders, expand the NDA, and consolidate power. But there is a political reality that every strategist should remember.

Leaders can change parties overnight. Voters may not.

Regional parties are not merely political organizations. They are repositories of identity, caste equations, local aspirations, linguistic pride, and state specific grievances. Voters often build emotional and political connections with these parties over decades.

Of course, voters do leave regional parties when they are unhappy with governance, corruption, leadership, or performance. But they do not automatically transfer their loyalty simply because a leader, MP, or MLA has switched sides.

And that is where the BJP may face a long term challenge.

For years, the Congress suffered because anti BJP votes were fragmented across dozens of regional parties. The BJP benefited from that fragmentation. 2024 General Elections, NDA won with roughly 44% vote share , whereas INDIA Block and other regional parties got approximately 66%.

Today, as regional parties are weakened, split, or absorbed, a new political dynamic may emerge. If regional party voters refuse to automatically migrate to the BJP, where do they go?

Many may simply gravitate towards the strongest available alternative. And in national politics, that alternative is increasingly the Congress.

Ironically, by shrinking the political space occupied by regional parties, the BJP may be helping create what the Congress has struggled to achieve for over a decade: the consolidation of anti BJP votes.

The real question is not whether the BJP can absorb leaders. The real question is whether it can absorb their voters.

History suggests that the two are rarely the same thing.
