Jammu and Kashmir: Nirmala Sitharaman, Army Chief meets Governor Malik; discuss security issues

Srinagar | Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitaraman on Sunday met the newly appointed Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik and discussed security issues in the State. Sitaraman was accompanied by Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat.

Earlier on her day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Sitharaman also visited the Balbir forward post in Jammu and Kashmir where she interacts with troops of the 28 Inf Division. Nirmala Sitharaman is the first Defence Minister to visit this post.

Nirmala Sitharaman and General Rawat meeting with the governor is termed crucial ahead of the local panchayat elections the state. Jammu and Kashmir is currently under President’s rule after BJP withdrew its support from the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government.

Satya Pal Malik, the former governor of Bihar replaced NN Vohra as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir. According to sources the appointment of Malik comes after differences between Vohra and central government over the formation of a new government in the state. The Union wanted a formation of a new government in the state but Vohra who had earlier handled the state
times was against the decision.
