Kamal Haasan meets HD Kumaraswamy to discuss the Cauvery issue

Kamal Haasan met Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru on Monday and discussed the issue of sharing of the Cauvery water.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan said the Karnataka Chief Minister’s response was “heartening”. “I see hope in the conversation I have had with HD Kumaraswamy,” Mr Haasan said after the hour-long meeting.

Mr Kumaraswamy told journalists that maintaining a harmonious relationship between the two States and expediting the resolution of the issue, keeping the interests of farmers of both the States in mind, were discussed.

The division of Cauvery waters is one of the key points of conflict between Mr Haasan’s state, Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Karnataka. Last month, fellow actor-politician Rajinikanth had asked Mr Kumaraswamy to do right by Karnataka after he came to power.

Mr. Haasan said he came as a representative of Tamil Nadu people and not as an actor or a political leader. “I am ready to be the bridge between the two States. We need water for kuruvai crop. Mr. Kumaraswamy has responded positively.”

Joking about family wisdom on the need for out-of-court-settlements, Mr Haasan said, “We are sharing water. There are no two ways about it… happy to know that the Chief Minister is looking at it in the same manner.”
