Mallikarjun Kharge said the Karnataka by-polls proved that the people supported the alliance being formed by the regional parties to defeat the BJP.
Kalaburgi| Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that the recent results of the by-polls are an indication that regional party alliances can take on BJP and are even supported by the people. Talking to reporters in his home state Karnataka, he said the Karnataka by-polls proved that the people supported the alliance being formed by the regional parties to defeat the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha election.
Kharge even expressed confidence that the Anti-BJP front would defeat the incumbent Modi government and can take on Prime Minister Modi. Emphasising on the party’s role, he said that Congress which is the single largest opposition party is leading in forming the alliance.
Comparing the style of leadership between Congress president Rahul Gandhi and PM Modi he said, “While our president, Rahul Gandhi is attempting to form the alliance of regional parties in a democratic manner, Mr Modi behaves like a dictator. The grand alliance is therefore essential at the national level.” However, he dodged the question about the leadership face of the anti-BJP alliance. He said that the parties will decide after the results of the Lok Sabha poll on who should lead the alliance.
When asked about the arrest of Karnataka BJP leader and mining baron Janardhan Reddy in a Ponzi scheme, he said the arrest was not politically motivated. He also denied that the Congress-JD(S) government in Karnataka were behind the arrest. Recently, Ballary- a stronghold of BJP was won by Congress candidate in the by-polls.
