LIVE updates: Former FM Arun Jaitley passes away; Last rites at 2 PM tomorrow

Senior BJP leader and former Finance Minister of India, Arun Jaitley passed away on Saturday morning. He was admitted to AIIMS at around following complaints of Chest pain. He was 66 years old.

He had been admitted to the Cardio-Neuro centre of AIIMS. Reportedly, nephrologists were examining the former FM.

The health of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who was admitted to AIIMS, deteriorated on August 23, hospital sources said, as reported by PTI.

Jaitley, 66, was hospitalized to AIIMS Delhi on August 9, after he suffered from breathlessness.

He was put on a ventilator in a week.

Several prominent leaders including President Ram Nath Kovind, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Jitendra Singh, Ram Vilas Paswan and Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Congress leaders Abhishek Singhvi and Jyotiraditya Scindia and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat have visited the hospital in recent days to enquire about Mr. Jaitley’s health and meet his family members.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to former FM Arun Jaitley who passed away earlier today, and called him “a political gaint”.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Modi wrote, “Arun Jaitley Ji was a political giant, towering intellectual and legal luminary. He was an articulate leader who made a lasting contribution to India. His passing away is very saddening. Spoke to his wife Sangeeta Ji as well as son Rohan, and expressed condolences. Om Shanti”.

Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passes away aged 66

Arun Jaitley, the finance minister of India and a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was born on December 28, 1952, in New Delhi. A lawyer by profession, he then joined politics full time. Arun Jaitley’s father Maharaj Kishan Jaitley was a noted lawyer. He did his schooling from St Xavier’s School in Delhi and graduated from Shri Ram College of Commerce. He then took a law degree in 1977.
