Asaduddin Owaisi questions BJP on Sabarimala issue during Triple Talaq discussion

New Delhi | Amid the introduction of a fresh Triple Talaq Bill in the Lok Sabha, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi questioned the intention of the BJP over the bill.

Opposing the bill, the Hyderabad MP asked if the BJP cares so much about the Muslim women why it is silent on Sabarimala issue. He said that the Supreme Court has declared instant Triple Talaq void which means that marriage does not end with such practices.

Owaisi further added that the provision of 3 years of imprisionment in the government’s bill will put the burden of proof on the Muslim women as her husband will be in jail for three years.

Congress also opposed the Triple Talaq Bill. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the bill provides nothing for the Muslim Women but only punishes the Muslim men. Tharor further demanded a universal law which provides protection to women from all communities.

Introducing the bill, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said,” Rights of Muslim women will be protected as the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 is about justice & empowerment of women.

Despite uproar by the opposition parties, Lok Sabha speaker called for a voice vote and ruled the bill could be introduced in Lok Sabha.

With the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha last month, the contentious bill had lapsed as it could not be passed by Parliament and was pending in Rajya Sabha. Bills that are introduced in Rajya Sabha and are pending there do not lapse with the dissolution of Lok Sabha. Bills passed by Lok Sabha and pending in the Rajya Sabha, however, lapse.
