Maharashtra: Deadlock continues over portfolios, allies fight for bigger share

According to Sources, Congress has got 12 berths in the Uddhav Thackeray-led government, wants two additional berths relating to rural developments

Mumbai: Maharashtra’s deadlock continues over portfolio allocation and ShivSena, Congress and NCP remained inconclusive on assigning ministries to its cabinet ministers. After a prolonged consideration over the matter, Congress leader Ashok Chavan said that a decision on the matter is likely to be taken on Friday.

“Whatever few issues were there regarding portfolio distribution have been resolved. We’ve sent our proposal to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray the decision will be taken on Friday,” Ashok Chavan said to reporters after the meeting. The meeting happened at the residence of Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other leaders including ShivSena’s Eknath Shinde, Congress’ Balasaheb Thorat, and Ashok Chavan attended the meeting that took place in Mumbai. According to sources, Congress has got 12 berths in the Uddhav Thackeray-led government, wants two additional berths relating to rural developments.

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar had said that the allocation of portfolios will be done by the end of the day. The reports suggest the delay in allocation is due to unrest among the party leaders over portfolio distribution.

On the other hand, ShivSena, in its mouthpiece Saamana has slammed dissenters over the allocation of portfolios saying that no assurance was made to individual leaders. “There are three parties in the coalition hence there is a limit of making assurance. It doesn’t seem like Congress or NCP pays attention to its constituent parties. However, ShivSena did it”.

On November 28 ShivSena chief Uddhav Thackeray took oath as Maharashtra CM via an unusual coalition with Congress and NCP. On December 30 around 36 ministers, including ShivSena leader Aaditya Thackeray took oaths as ministers in Uddhav Thackeray’s cabinet. NCP leader Ajit Pawar was appointed as the Deputy CM of the state.
