Maharashtra Elections: How VBA dented Congress-NCP’s chances of winning more seats

Ironically VBA is the only party in this election to contest the highest number of seats, 235, which are more than the single largest party that is BJP

Mumbai: In Maharashtra, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance is all set to form the government in the state Assembly election results were out on Thursday. The alliance won 161 seats, crossing the majority mark of 145. The alliance had won 185 seats in the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly polls. If the current trends do not change then the alliance would have lost over 25 seats this time.

The BJP faced real competition, with three parties the INC, NCP and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). The INC and the NCP won together around 104 seats, and the VBA could not even bag one seat. The data Analyzing the results of the polls found that the VBA joined hands with the INC-NCP alliance, Maharashtra would have faced a hung Assembly like Haryana.

Actually VBA was a game-changer in this election as no political party or alliance could have formed its government. The Data compared the vote percentage of the seats where the BJP won to the sum of vote percentage of the INC+NCP+VBA, and the BJP would have lost 34 seats in that case. Due to VBA participation in the elections Congress and NCP lost on several major seats. There are around 11 such seats NCP couldn’t manage to win and 12 by INC lost with a very small margin. Prakash Ambedkar’s VBA couldn’t win a single seat as its entire vote bank is spread across Maharashtra different constituencies.

Ironically VBA is the only party in this election to contest the highest number of seats, 235, which are more than the single largest party that is BJP.

In this state elections, many regional parties approached VBA such as NCP to be part of there alliance but VB Chief Prakash Ambedkar refused and contested as many as seats in Maharashtra.

In some constituencies, VBA became a spoiler for even BJP also they couldn’t retain there prominent seats in the Vidharbha region.
