New Delhi | West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday will be meeting Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh over the issue of NRC draft released on Monday which left 40 lakh people being homeless in Assam.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Mamata Banerjee described Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) final draft a ”game-plan” of the Centre. Criticising the government she said,“Many people have been identified as foreigners and they are to be sent back. There are many children and women among them”.” people had become “refugees” in their own country,” she added. Banerjee in the press conference requested Rajnath Singh to bring an amendment on this issue.
However, while commenting on the draft on Monday Rajnath Singh assured that no coercive action would be taken against those whose names were not mentioned in the draft list. “Even someone whose name is not on the list can approach the foreigner’s tribunal. No coercive action will be taken against anyone; hence there is no need for anyone to panic,” he told media.
Mamata Banerjee will also be meeting former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha and controversial BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha in Delhi at the residence of veteran lawyer Ram Jethmalani.
