Mamta Banerjee criticise Assam’s NRC draft; alleges BJP for ‘Divide and Rule’ politics

Kolkata | West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged the BJP led Assam government for playing ‘Divide and Rule’ politics after Assam’s National Register for Citizens 2nd updated draft left out 40 lakh people.

Addressing a press conference after the NRC released its draft, Mamta Banerjee said, “Many people have been identified as foreigners and they are to be sent back. There are many children and women among them”.” people had become “refugees” in their own country,” she added.

Mamata Banerjee further accused the government of a forceful eviction.”There were people who have Aaadhar cards and passports but still, their names are not in the draft list. Names of people were removed on the basis of surnames also,” said Banerjee.

“We are worried because people are being made refugees in their own country. Its a plan to throw out Bengali speaking people and Biharis. Consequences will be felt in our state also,” alleged Banerjee that people are being isolated through a game plan.

Requesting the Union Minister Rajnath Singh to bring an amendment on this issue, Banerjee questioned “Where will the 40 lakh people whose names have been deleted go? Does Centre have any rehabilitation program for them? She further added that Ultimately it is Bengal which will suffer. Its just vote politics by BJP.

In order to count the illegal migration into Assam from neighboring Bangladesh, the government released an updated National Register of Citizens or NRC for the first time since 1951.
