Modi’s friends looted public money while he looked otherwise: Rahul Gandhi

Recalling PM Modi’s promise to be a “chowkidar” (protector) of the nation, Gandhi said that PM had taken the responsibility to protect people’s money.

As the Punjab National Bank scam widens further, the opposition is leaving no stone unturned to corner the Modi government. Congress on Saturday launched a fiery attack on the BJP government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Taking a jibe at PM Modi’s demonetization drive a year ago, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said, while Prime minister Modi took money from people’s pocket, his friends were busy looting the banks. Rahul said, “Prime Minister took money from the people’s pockets to put it into the banks. But now his friends and cronies are looting it and he is not saying anything.”
Earlier, Congress’ Chhota Modi jibe at the escapade of Jewellery giant Nirav Modi who is involved in 11,400 crores PNB scam, drew ire from the BJP.

Further taking a dig at PM Modi’s “Pariksha pe Charcha” event following the release of his book ‘Exam Warriors’, Rahul Gandhi said Prime minister should instead answer the people’s questions. Gandhi said, “I would like to request the Prime Minister to come out and, instead of spending an hour and a half explaining to little kids how to take exams, explain to the people of India what is going to be done to this Mr Nirav Modi.” Rahul also sought an answer from PM Modi on steps taken by the government to ensure the safety of the banking system. Rahul Gandhi even alleged that the scam might amount up to 22,000 crores.

Recalling PM Modi’s 2014 election campaign speech where he promised to be a “chowkidar” (protector) of the nation, Gandhi said that PM had taken the responsibility to protect people’s money. He further asserted, “Now there is a failure, and the PM is silent. The PM will have to come out and say what happened, why it happened, and what is going to do now.”
The law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in a press conference had attacked Congress and the previous UPA government and had claimed that the fraud date back to 2011. However, Rahul Gandhi rejected the charge. Gandhi said that first FIR was registered in May 2015 and 90% of the transactions took place under this government. Accusing the government of not taking responsibility, the Gandhi scion said that the Prime Minister has “destroyed the financial sector” of the country.
Later in the day, Congress leader Kapil Sibbal raised questions on RBI and regulatory mechanism of the government. Congress steering committee also published a statement that read, “The truth is that ‘bank scam’ has exposed the ‘culture of crony capitalism’ that has thrived and flourished under the Modi government.”
