Supreme court issues a notice to UP government against the name change plea of Allahbad to Prayagraj

Plea states state government has no rights to change the names of railway stations, central universities and other as they are ruled by central government

DELHI| On Monday Supreme court has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government following the plea filed by a petitioner challenging the validity of Allahabad’s name being changed to Prayagraj.

Reason given by the petitioner is the state government don’t have the authority of changing names of railway stations, central universities and other institutes as they are ruled by central government.

500 year ago Mughal emperor Akbar kept the city name Allahabad proving it wrong BJP justified it to Prayagraj. Soon in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP-led Yogi Adityanath government moves came in power.

The BJP government claimed they were restoring the old name of the city that was changed by Akbar.

The move was highly slammed by the opposition, scholars and historians who said the government is tampering with history.

Allahabad got its name in 1575. The Mughal Emperor Akbar called it Illahabas, meaning the abode of God.

Before Akbar rechristened the city, it was known as Prayag. Some medieval texts, including Akbar’s court historian Abul Fazl, called it Piyag. The Rig Veda and some of the Puranas mention it, giving it a high religious value in India.
