New Delhi| A Delhi High Court today convicted the NGO owner Brajesh Thakur and 18 other in the case of sexual & physical assault with the girls in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur shelter home.

Additional Sessions Judge Saurabh Kulshreshtha, who read the verdict, convicted Thakur for aggravated sexual assault under POCSO Act and gang rape. One of the accused was acquitted by the court.

Brajesh Thakur, who is a former MLA of Bihar People’s Party (BPP), ran the shelter home where he sexually assaulted many girls. The court had framed charges against Thakur of criminal conspiracy to commit rape and penetrative sexual assault against minors. The accused included eight females and 12 males.

In May 2018, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) had submitted a report to the Bihar government, in which they highlighted the alleged sexual assault of minor girls in Bihar’s shelter home.

Bihar government had shifted the girls from the shelter home to other protected spaces after the allegations in 2018. An FIR was filed against the 11 accused on May 31, 2018.

The Supreme Court after taking cognizance of the sexual assault with 30 minor girls in the shelter home had transferred the case to CBI in November.

Brajesh Thakur, in a plea filed by him, had claimed that the testimonies of witnesses in the case aren’t reliable. The court dismissed his plea.

The CBI had earlier filed an interim report in Supreme Court that there were no evidence of murder in the shelter home. The court found the accused guilty of sexual and physical assault.
