Nitin Gadkari Terms Ladki Bahin Yojana As ‘Poisonous Maiden’

While speaking at a public event in Nagpur, Gadkari said: “It is uncertain whether investors will receive their subsidy payment on time as the government also has to allocate funds for the Ladki Bahin Yojana.”

Union minister Nitin Gadkari, who is known to speak his heart, has said the Maharashtra government’s  ‘Ladki Bahin Yojana’, which provides financial aid to underprivileged women, could affect the timely payment of subsidies in other sectors.

The veteran BJP leader described the government as a “vishkanya’ (poisonous maiden) and added it should be kept at bay irrespective of which political party heads it.

While speaking at a public event in Nagpur, Gadkari said: “It is uncertain whether investors will receive their subsidy payment on time as the government also has to allocate funds for the Ladki Bahin Yojana.”

The minister said: “Do not get into its mess. You can take whatever subsidy you want, but there is no assurance of when you will get it, whether you will get anything or not.”

He further said: “My son came and said that he has received Rs 450 crores in subsidy and tax money is deposited. He asked (me) when he would get the subsidy. I told him to pray to God because there is no assurance. Will you get it, it is possible….(but) the Ladli Behan Yojana has just started, so the subsidy money has to be given to them for their work, naturally, it has got stuck.”

What Is Ladki Bahin Yojana?

The Ladki Bahin Yojana aims to provide financial aid of Rs.1,500 monthly to 2.5 crore eligible women whose annual income is less than 2.5 Lakhs. Women under the age bracket of 21-65 will benefit under the scheme. The state government has till now deposited three instalments of the scheme. The scheme is expected to cost the State exchequer ₹46,000 crore annually. The other States that have introduced similar schemes include West Bengal, Delhi, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, The Roads Transport & Highways Minister had days ago claimed that he had received offers to become prime minister “multiple times” before and after Lok Sabha polls.

Mr Gadkari made the statement at the India Today conclave when asked if he could divulge details about his earlier remark that an opposition party leader had offered support if he was ready to take up the post of PM.

“I have received such an offer multiple times, even before the (Lok Sabha) election and afterwards,” he said.

Meanwhile, days ago, Milind Bhosale, President of the Maharashtra State Contractors Federation and State Engineers Association, said that payments for completed projects worth Rs 76,000 had been delayed for over 2.5 years. This has led to widespread discontent, with contractors threatening a strike over unpaid bills worth Rs 76,000 crore.
