Nitish Kumar asks K Chandrasekhar to support JDU candidate for Rajya Sabha deputy chairman election

New Delhi | Bihar Chief Minister and Janta Dal-United (JDU) Chief Nitish Kumar on Tuesday urged Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) to support Harivansh Narayan Singh for the upcoming deputy chairman election in Rajya Sabha.

According to media reports, Nitish Kumar personally called TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar and asked him to support Singh’s candidature from National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Rajya Sabha.

After the phone call, the Telangana Chief Minister’s office issued a statement stating Mr Rao told Nitish Kumar that he will take a decision after consultation with party leaders.

With no formal announcement from BJP led NDA, sources claim that Harivansh Singh will be NDA’s candidate. The post of the Rajya Sabha Deputy chairman is lying vacant after the retirement of PJ Kurien. Earlier Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu announced in Rajya Sabha that the election will be held at 11 am on August 9. Naidu suggested that the deputy chairman should be elected by consensus. Nomination papers will have to be filed before noon on August 8.
