New Delhi | Former Union Minister P Chidambaram, who on Thursday was taken to Tihar jail, spent his first night feeling “very restless”.
The veteran Congress leader, who has been a vocal critic of the Modi government till the last few days before a Delhi court rejected his bail plea, will be lodged at jail number 7 at Tihar. This is the usual cell where those accused in Enforcement Directorate (ED) cases are lodged.
Incidentally, his son Karti was also lodged in this cell for 12 days in the same case last year.
However, no special treatments have been given to the Former Finance Minister. will get no special facilities, except a separate cell and a Western toilet as specified by the court, prison officials said.
Like other inmates, he will also have access to the prison’s library and can watch television for a specified period. He had a light dinner and his medicines on his first night in jail, sources said. The usual dinner menu is rotis, dal, sabji and rice.
On Friday morning, Chidambaram was given tea for breakfast around 6 am along with the prison menu of bread, poha and porridge.
P Chidambaram, who enjoys Z+ security as a former Union finance minister, will get no special facilities at the Tihar jail. He will be allowed to walk outside his prison cell.
He is been allowed his medicines and spectacles inside the jail.
The 74-year-old leader has also been given a pillow and blanket.
The Congress leader had demanded to have access to western toilet facilities and he has been provided with the same, going by the jail manual.
Chidambaram, who was also the home minister during UPA government, was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Thursday in the INX Media corruption case.
