Now, Ahmedabad to be renamed Karnavati?

The Gujarat government hinted that if there were no legal hurdles, it would be considering the renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati.

Following the footsteps of Uttar Pradesh government under CM Yogi Adityanath, Gujarat too has joined the name-changing race. Nitin Patel, deputy CM of Gujarat indicated a willingness to change Ahmedabad’s name to Karnavati. Talking to a news agency Patel said that the BJP government in the state would consider changing Ahmedabad’s name if it receives support. “We can think of changing the name at an appropriate time,” Nitin Patel said.

The statement came barely few hours after UP government announced the renaming of Faizabad as Ayodhya. The Gujarat government on Tuesday hinted that if there were no legal hurdles, it would be considering the renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati.

Ahmedabad, the only Indian city to get a UNESCO World heritage tag, is one of the busiest cities in the state.

The state Congress, however, slammed the Gujarat govt’s move calling it an “election gimmick”. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that the move was aimed to get more Hindus to vote for the BJP. “For the BJP, issues like construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya and renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati are the means to get votes of Hindus,” said Doshi.

Accusing the BJP of cheating Hindus over the years, he said that the party uses these issues as a poll plank and dumps them once elected to power.

Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government had also renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj.
