On Rahul Gandhi’s 48th birthday, here are some lesser known facts about the Congress President

From championing Japanese Martial Arts to working as a salaried professional, here are some rare facts about Rahul Gandhi.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi today celebrates his 48th birthday. The head of India’s oldest party was born on 19 June 1970 to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi is the current President of the Indian National Congress. In 2007, he was named General Secretary of the Indian National Congress in charge of the youth and student organization of the Party. In January 2013, he assumed office as Vice President of the Indian National Congress.

According to Congress website, Gandhi has attended St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, Harvard College and Rollins College, Florida from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He went on to receive an M. Phil. in Development Studies from Trinity College, Cambridge University. Thereafter, he joined the Monitor Group, a strategy consulting group, in London, where he worked for three years.

In 2004, Gandhi announced that he would be entering politics and will contest the Lok Sabha election from his father’s former constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi has a black belt in aikodo, a Japanese martial art. He’s been practicing with Martial Art form since 2009. According to his coach Sensei Paritos Kar, Rahul also knows sword-fighting and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

In May 2011, Rahul Gandhi was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police on his way to met the agitated farmers in Bhatta Parsaul village but released after 3 hours and was asked to leave for Delhi.

According to a media report, Asha Devi, the mother of victim of the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape, said Rahul Gandhi counselled and motivated her son after the heart-rending tragedy. “After learning that he wanted to join the defence forces, Rahul asked him to pursue a pilot’s training course after completion of school,” Asha Devi said. “When he was studying, Rahul used to talk to him over the phone and taught him to adopt a ‘never quit’ attitude.” she said.
