The statement of Jignesh Mewani comes in the wake of incidents of vandalising statue of Lenin in Tripura and statue of Periyar in Tamil Nadu.
Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani has said that one-day Dalits will take down the Manu statue situated in premises of Rajasthan High Court. His comments have come in the wake of series of incidents of vandalising statues of Lenin and Periyar.
Jignesh Mewani tweeted asking PM Modi to tell his (BJP) workers to not break statues of Lenin and Periyar. He suggested, instead, PM Modi should ask them to “destroy the Manu statue”. “Modi ji, tell your boys to destroy the statue of Manu, not Lenin or Periyar,” wrote Jignesh Mewani. He further asserted that the Dalits will never forget the legacy left behind by Ambedkar, Lenin, Periyar and Phule. “Someday they will definitely destroy the Manu-murti at Rajasthan high court,” Mewani added.
Modi ji tell your boys to destroy the statue of manu, not lenin or Periyar. Mind well, exploited dalits will always cherish the legacy of aambedkar, lenin, periyar, Phule and some day they will definitely destroy the manu-murti at Rajasthan high court.

The incident of vandalism of statue was first reported in Tripura on Monday where a mob allegedly of BJP workers bulldozed the statue of Russian Communist Icon Vladimir Lenin built by the previous Manik Sarkar government. On Tuesday, another such incident was reported in Tamil Nadu where social reformer and Dravidian Movement icon Periyar’s statue was vandalized.
The news came hours after BJP National Secretary H. Raja in a Facebook post said that after Lenin, Periyar’s statue will be taken down too. After the Lenin’s statue was taken down, he had responded through a Facebook post saying there is no connection between Lenin and India. He asked what India’s connection with communists is. He said, “Today it is Lenin’s statue in Tripura, next will be the statue of caste fanatic Periyar.”
Another incident of statue Vandalising came to fore in West Bengal where Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s bust was vandalized in Kolkata’s Kalighat.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi has condemned the acts of vandalism happening in the country. However, the ripples of these incidents will also be seen in the ongoing budget session. DMK MP T Siva gives adjournment motion notice under rule 267 in Rajya Sabha on BJP leader H Raja’s remark on Periyar and desecration of Periyar Statue.
