Parliament Live Updates: “What was Amit Shah doing when Delhi was burning?”: Adhir Ranjan

At least 53 people died in the intense communal riots that broke in NE Delhi and several have been injured, mostly with gunshot wounds.

New Delhi| Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury questioned where was Amit Shah when the violence erupted. “Government, especially Home Minister Amit Shah, has to answer how violence continued for three days in Delhi. What was Amit Shah ji doing when Delhi was burning?” Chowdhury asked.

Union home minister Amit Shah is likely to make a statement on Delhi riots in the Lok Sabha at 8 pm. The Lok Sabha is discussing the Delhi riots under Rule 193 of the house proceedings which means there will be no voting after the debate.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Wednesday revoked the suspension of seven Congress MPs, who were suspended last week for the remaining period.

Lok Sabha on Thursday witnessed uproar over a controversial remark by an RLP MP, who is a BJP ally, against the Gandhi family during a discussion on coronavirus, leading to adjournment of proceedings for over an hour.

Congress members stormed the Well of the House as soon as Hanuman Beniwal said there should be a probe on whether coronavirus is being spread from the “home” of Congress President Sonia Gandhi as a large number of people who were found to be affected by the virus are from Italy.

The Budget session of Parliament resumed on Monday and will continue till April 3. Opposition parties will strongly raise the issue of communal riots in Northeast Delhi and demand the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah.

Top Congress leaders on Sunday met at party chief Sonia Gandhi’s residence to decide the strategy to be adopted in Parliament. Sources said notices have been given in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha seeking suspension of all business to discuss the situation in Delhi.

Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh said he will demand a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the riots.
