โ€œPeople Want House To Runโ€: Speaker Om Birla Slams Opposition MPs Protest On Price Rise

Om Birla

โ€œThe people of the country want the house to run. But it canโ€™t run like this. I will not allow such a situation to remain in the house,โ€ Om Birla said.

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday warned opposition MPs to behave and not show placards in the house.

The Speakerโ€™s warning came after opposition MPs protested against the price rise by shouting slogans and holding placards questioning the government on what they claimed was runaway inflation.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi requested the Speaker to disqualify MPs who are holding placards inside the house. Some of the protesting MPs came to the well of the house after 3 pm, even after the Speakerโ€™s warning earlier, which led to an adjournment till 3 pm.

โ€œThe people of the country want the house to run. But it canโ€™t run like this. I will not allow such a situation to remain in the house,โ€ Mr. Birla said.

The Speaker before adjourning the house till 4 pm said โ€œIf you want to show placards, do it outside the house. I am ready for discussions, but donโ€™t think my kind-heartedness is a weakness.โ€

Sloganeering while holding placards and banners, the opposition MPs demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi come to parliament and address their concerns over rising inflation and goods and services tax, or GST, hike on essential items.
