Delhi chokes on ‘hazardous’ air a day after Diwali

TestHostEntry

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), at 11 pm on Wednesday, the air quality in Delhi stood at 302 AQI which is ‘very poor’ category.

New Delhi| The air quality in the Delhi-NCR region dipped again on Thursday morning reaching ‘hazardous’ level. A thick blanket of smog engulfed the region a day after Diwali celebrations. The continuous declining air quality in the capital region has exposed people to major health hazards.

On Thursday morning, AQI was recorded at 999 in Anand Vihar and areas around Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. The AQI in Chanakyapuri was at 459. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), at 11 pm on Wednesday, the air quality stood at 302 AQI which is ‘very poor’ category. The observations noted a rapid decline in the air quality past 7 pm. The AQI at 7 pm was recorded 281. It then began to gradually decline. It was 291 at 8 pm, 294 at 9 pm and 296 at 10 pm, according to the CPCB. If the AQI is of ‘very poor’ category, it may lead to respiratory troubles.

Taking note of the deteriorating air quality, the Supreme Court had limited the bursting of firecrackers for two hours only. The Apex court ordered that firecrackers can be burst between 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali and other festivals. However, the hazardous Air Quality indicates that the SC order was violated in some parts of Delhi-NCR.
