PM Modi not declaring Kerala floods as a ‘National Disaster’ to use funds for self-promotion: Congress

New Delhi | The Congress Party on Monday alleged Prime Minister Narendra Modi of playing politics at the times of humanitarian crisis in Kerala.

Addressing a Press Conference, Congress leader and Supreme Court lawyer Jaiveer Shergill alleged that the State of Kerala requested Rs. 2000 crore for the relief work, however, the Central government just announced Rs. 500 crore relief package for the state.

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his extensive media coverage, the Congress leader questioned that a large-heartedness of PM Modi is only shown in his self-publicity. When he can spend ₹5000 Cr for his advertisements then why did he give only ₹500Cr to Kerala?” He further alleged that PM Modi is not declaring Kerala Floods as a National Disaster so as to prevent utilising the Contingency funds and instead use it for his self-promotion.

Alleging PM Modi of a step-motherly treatment towards Kerala, Shergill said,”The step-motherly treatment to Kerala by PM Modi proves that he does not believe in cooperative federalism.”

The Congress party further questioned that why is PM Modi not declaring Kerala Floods as a National Disaster? “By declaring it as a National Disaster fund by Central and State government in the ratio of 3:1 will be released for relief measures,” added Congress.
