Presidential Polls: Opposition Backed Candidate Yashwant Sinha Files Nomination

Parties supporting Sinha’s candidature include TMC, Congress, CPI, Shiv Sena, NCP, SP, DMK, RJD, NC, AIUDF, NCP, RLD, PDP, and AIMIM.

New Delhi: The opposition’s presidential candidate, Yashwant Sinha, filed his nomination papers at the Parliament in New Delhi on Monday.

He was accompanied by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Nationalist Congress Party Sharad Pawar.

Leaders including Congress’ Mallikarjun Kharge( Mallikarjun Kharge (leader of opposition Rajya Sabha) and Jairam Ramesh (Congress’s Social Media in charge)were also part of the entourage for the filing of the nomination.

Samajwadi Party chief  Akhilesh Yadav and RLD Chief Jayant Chaudhary were also present.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s (TRS) working president and Minister KT Rama Rao also attended the nomination program. Along with Rama Rao, son of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (also known as KCR), some of the TRS MPs were also present.

Former union minister, Yashwant Sinha (84), was chosen as the consensus candidate from the Joint Opposition for the upcoming Presidential elections which will take place on July 18, 2022.

On Friday, Droupadi Murmu, the BJP-led NDA’s choice for president, filed her nomination for the post, with a host of ruling party and alliance leaders on hand to endorse her application.

Ms. Murmu, 64, was accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior leaders of the ruling party, including BJP President JP Nadda.

The elections are scheduled to be held on July 18 and the votes will be counted on July 21. The last date for filing nominations is June 29.
