Rahul Gandhi, Chidambaram, call out against J&K Congress chief’s arrest

Srinagar | Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and P Chidambaram have objected to the arrest of Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir, calling the move “illegal”.

The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday said its chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir was put under house arrest by the authorities here.

“Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Ghulam Ahmad Mir was put under house arrest in Jammu Friday afternoon. Restrictions were imposed on his movement within and outside the state,” a party spokesman had said.

Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP government and said that it was another blow to democracy.

He wrote on Twitter, “I strongly condemn the arrest of our J&K PCC Chief, Shri Ghulam Ahmed Mir & spokesperson, Shri Ravinder Sharma in Jammu today. With this unprovoked action against a national political party, the Govt has delivered democracy another body blow. When will this madness end?”.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram strongly criticised the move, and called it “outrageously illegal”.

“Ghulam Ahmad Mir, PCC President, J&K is under house arrest in Jammu since Friday. There was no written order of detention. Outrageously illegal”, he wrote on Twitter.

Chidambaram invoked Article 21 of the Constitution and wrote, “The State has no right to deprive a citizen of his liberty for even one moment without the authority of law”.

He later added that he hoped courts will “secure the liberty of citizens”.

Various leaders have been detained in Jammu and Kashmir ever since the Centre revoked Article 370, including former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, as a “precautionary measure”.
