Rahul Gandhi: Last Congress president from Gandhi family?

New Delhi | With Rahul Gandhi’s official announcement of resigning as Congress President, The grand old party will be seeing a new face as it Chief apart from the Gandhi family who controlled the proceedings of the Congress party for decades.

Gandhi who took over as Congress President in 2017 submitted his resignation posting a letter on his Twitter account taking moral responsibility of the party’s loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The Congress in the 2019 parliamentary election won just 52 seats compared to Narendra Modi led BJP’s 303 seats.

After more than 21 years the Congress party will work under a leader who won’t hail from the Gandhi Family. Sonia Gandhi took over Sitaram Kesari in 1998 and from then Congress party continuously worked under Sonia Gandhi till 2017 winning the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha election. Rahul Gandhi took over his mother in 2017 but failed to create an impact apart from winning the assembly elections in Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh and formed government in Karnataka

The last non-Gandhi president of the Congress party was Sitaram Kesari from 1996 to 1998. Before Kesari, former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao presided over Congress party from 1991 to 1996.

Rahul Gandhi taking responsibility of the defeat in the Congress Working Committee held a day after the election results had submitted his resignation to the party and asked that the new Congress president should not be anyone from the Gandhi Family, not even Priyanka Gandhi.
