Rahul Gandhi slams government over spying of Indian citizens through WhatsApp

“The Government seeking WhatsApp’s to spy on Indian citizens Modi asking Dassault who made money on the sale of Rafale jets to India,” said Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: On Thursday WhatsApp snooping of human rights activists and journalists in India reached the political corridors, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi added a Rafale angle to the row. He attacked the central government for spying innocent people.

“The Government seeking WhatsApp’s to spy on Indian citizens Modi asking Dassault who made money on the sale of Rafale jets to India,” said Rahul Gandhi.

As Facebook-owned WhatsApp sued Israeli cyber intelligence company NSO Group this week that exploited its video calling system to snoop on 1,400 selected users globally, details emerged on Thursday that there were “insignificant number” of Indian human rights activists and journalists among those who were targeted.

Earlier, the Congress accused the government of being behind the entire controversy and demanded an investigation monitored by the Supreme Court.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said his party suspects that even judges of the Supreme Court and high courts, besides many opposition leaders, have been snooped upon.

Surjewala said, “We suspect that many opposition leaders and judges of the Supreme Court and high courts are in this list,”.

As Mr. Gandhi’s party asked the Supreme Court to “take cognizance and issue notice to the BJP government”, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad hit back, saying the Congress had snooped on “highly reputed individuals” at the instance of one family.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad “Government of India is concerned at the breach of privacy of citizens of India on the messaging platform WhatsApp. Our government has asked WhatsApp to explain the kind of breach and what it is doing to safeguard the privacy of millions of Indian citizens”.

Immediately BJP responded and targeted Rahul Gandhi over his frequent foreign trips, saying he must provide all details to the parliament. The Congress has said Mr. Gandhi is on a “meditational trip abroad”.

BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said “What is the great secrecy that Rahul Gandhi cannot inform the Lok Sabha secretariat? How does he pay for his luxurious trips abroad? As a public representative and a senior Congress leader, Gandhi is expected to disclose details rather than keep them shrouded in mystery,”.
