Reaching Out To Dissenters? Sonia Gandhi To Meet G-23 Who Sought “Leadership Change”

It is not clear whether former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Party GS Priyanka Gandhi will be a part of the meeting of Sonia Gandhi with G 23 leaders.

 

New Delhi| Almost four months after the unprecedented dissent in Congress over leadership change, Interim party president Sonia Gandhi is likely to reach out to the dissenters. These dissenting leaders known as G-23 had written a letter to Gandhi asking her for a complete overhaul in the party’s functioning.

Sonia Gandhi has called an important meeting of the top leaders of the party on 19 December. She has also invited disgruntled senior leaders in the Congress to this meeting, who recently wrote a letter demanding change in the organization by electing a permanent president in the party.

Meeting ahead of the election for Congress President

It is being speculated that this meeting has been called to form a consensus on the president of Congress party. In this meeting, Sonia Gandhi can discuss with senior party leaders about the election of the new president. Congress is likely to hold an AICC session in January to elect a new president, for which the party leadership plans to hold discussions in this meeting.

Apart from this meeting, Sonia Gandhi is also meeting leaders who had sought an appointment in the last 3 months. Sonia has invited some senior leaders who are angry with the party. This is the first time Sonia Gandhi will meet Congress leaders face to face after the outbreak of Covid-19 epidemic.

Sources said that former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Kamal Nath has an important role in preparing the ground for the meeting of these leaders with Sonia Gandhi and he will also attend this proposed meeting on December 19. Kamal Nath met Sonia a few days ago.

Rahul and Priyanka’s presence not clear

There is still no clarity whether former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi will be a part of it or not. Although Priyanka is also considered to be important in this latest development. Sources say that the scope of reconciliation may increase after the meeting of these leaders with Sonia Gandhi.

Dissident Leaders Wrote Letter To Sonia Gandhi

It is noteworthy that in the month of August, 23 Congress leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and Kapil Sibal had written to Sonia Gandhi demanding that she be the active president of the party and make a comprehensive organizational change. Many Congress leaders took this as a challenge to the party leadership and especially the Gandhi family.

Many leaders also demanded action against Ghulam Nabi Azad. Even after the dismal performance of the Congress in Bihar assembly elections and by-elections in some states, Azad and Sibal had openly criticized the party’s style of functioning and demanded a comprehensive change in it. After this, he again came became the target of many Congress leaders.
