“Received Love Letter”: Sharad Pawar Blows Centre On Income Tax Notice

Sharad Pawar

Uddhav Thackeray’s resignation from the top position on Wednesday caused the Nationalist Congress Party of Sharad Pawar, a member of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, to lose power.

Mumbai: Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, tweeted on Thursday that the Income Tax authorities had given him notice. He explained that the “love letter” relates to the affidavits submitted for the elections of 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2020 and claimed he is not concerned about sharing information.

As the BJP completed its coup to topple the 31-month-old Uddhav Thackeray government, which includes Sharad Pawar’s party and the Congress, Mr. Pawar reported on the development on the day Shiv Sena rebel leader Eknath Shinde took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Pawar posted a tweet which claimed that he recently got a love letter from the income tax department regarding poll affidavits submitted in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2020.

In a subsequent tweet, the seasoned politician took aim at the BJP-led Central government and claimed that the agency was “collecting information on particular persons.”

“The effectiveness of this department has improved in quality. It appears that a strategy shift has occurred after concentrating on obtaining information for so long and gathering information from particular sources,” the tweet from Mr. Pawar was roughly translated from Marathi.

Uddhav Thackeray’s resignation from the top position on Wednesday caused Mr. Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party, a member of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, to lose control of the government.

Days before to Mr. Thackeray’s departure, Mr. Shinde led a mutiny with at least 39 Shiv Sena MLAs, charging that Mr. Thackeray had disregarded the demands of Shiv Sena MLAs to dissolve the alliance with Congress and the NCP. However, Mr. Pawar dismissed the assertions of the renegade Sena MLAs as “baseless.”

He said, “This accusation is without merit. It is unrelated to the NCP or Congress. NCP and Congress are being held accountable because something needs to be explained to the public (as a justification).”
