Sabarimala verdict live updates: Supreme Court sends the case to bigger bench

The Sabarimala shrine had witnessed protests by devotees and right-wing outfits against the LDF government’s decision to implement the Supreme Court verdict.

Thursday could be the day when women devotees would know if they can climb the hilltops to Sabarimala shrine after the supreme court gives the order. Last year, the apex court had ordered that women of all ages must be allowed into the famous shrine in Kerala, ending a centuries-old ban on women and girls between 10 and 50 years. As the verdict sparked controversies and protests, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), which manages the Sabarimala shrine, argued that the court cannot intervene with an old belief. Last year the state of Kerala has seen massive protest and even journalists were heckled.

People of Kerala have still not accepted last year’s verdict. In this case, Menstruating women are not allowed to worship the Shrine and ban has been implemented for many years. The shrine had witnessed protests by devotees and right-wing outfits against the LDF government’s decision to implement the Supreme Court verdict in 2018 allowing all women, including those in the menstruating age and also to offer prayers at the shrine. In this verdict, the gender equality issue was raised several times and many people are backing the entry of women in the Shrine.

A review petition was filed in the case later. The verdict in the case will be delivered by the bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi today.
