Said ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ in heat of political campaigning: Rahul Gandhi to SC

New Delhi | Congress President Rahul Gandhi today responding to the Supreme Court notice on ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ statement against Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he gave the statement in the heat of the political campaigning.

The Supreme Court on April 15 had directed Congress President Rahul Gandhi to provide an explanation over his statement of Chowkidar Chor hai attributed to Supreme Court.

In the response filed in the Supreme Court on BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi’s plea Rahul Gandhi said he had made the statements in the heat of political campaigning which have been misused by his opponents.

Meenakshi Lekhi in her petition had claimed that ‘the words used and attributed by Rahul Gandhi to Supreme Court in the Rafale case has been made to appear something else. He is replacing his personal statement as the Supreme Court’s order and trying to create prejudice’.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had made it clear that Gandhi’s remarks, made in the media, on the Rafale verdict were incorrectly attributed to the apex court. ” We have considered the matter. We make it clear that this Court had no occasion to record any view or finding or make any observation as allegedly attributed to the Court by the respondent inasmuch as what was decided by this Court was a purely legal question of admissibility of certain documents to which objections were raised by the learned Attorney General.” a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.
