SEC holds meeting with West Bengal government, discuss rural poll security

Kolkata, Apr 30 (PTI) The West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) today held a high-level meeting with state government officials to discuss security arrangements for the May 14 panchayat polls in the state.

State Election Commissioner A K Singh held the meeting with DGP of West Bengal police, ADG (law and order), among others, SEC sources said.

“We have asked the state government to ensure adequate security arrangements in each and every booth and polling premises to ensure free and fair polls,” an SEC official said.

According to sources, the commission is of the opinion that security arrangements need to be ensured for holding free and fair elections.

Opposition parties in West Bengal during the meeting with SEC on Saturday had expressed grievances over the upcoming single-phase panchayat polls and the security arrangements for the same.

The SEC had then said it would talk to the state government and ensure proper security arrangements.

Apart from security arrangements, the SEC is also concerned about the huge number of polling personnel that is needed to conduct the polls in more than 58,000 booths of the state.
