Shashi Tharoor clarifies statement on ‘Hindu-Pakistan’; terms BJP/RSS idea as mirror image of Pakistan

Thiruvananthapuram | Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday clarified his stand on his statement of India transforming into ‘Hindu Pakistan’ if BJP is re-elected in 2019.

On a Facebook post Shashi Tharoor stated, “BJP/RSS idea of a Hindu Rashtra is the mirror image of Pakistan a state with a dominant majority religion that seeks to put its minorities in a subordinate place.” ‘That would be a Hindu Pakistan,” he added. Tharoor further mentioned that “It is not what our freedom movement fought for, nor the idea of India enshrined in our Constitution.”

“Pakistan was created as a state with a dominant religion, that discriminates against its minorities and denies them equal rights. India never accepted the logic that had partitioned the country,” he added.

Earlier while delivering a lecture on ‘Threats Faced by Indian Democracy and Secularism’ Tharoor said “If they (BJP) win a repeat in the Lok Sabha our democratic constitution as we understand it will not survive as they will have all the elements they need to tear apart the constitution of India and write a new one”. “The only thing that had stood in its way is a two-third majority in the Rajya Sabha, However, they already have more than 20 states under their belt, so a Rajya Sabha majority looks near,” added Tharoor.

Responding to the allegation, BJP Spokesperson Sambit Patra criticised the Congress leader for his views and demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi. “Rahul Gandhi must apologise for what Shashi Tharoor said. Congress was responsible for creation of Pakistan because of its ambitions yet again it has gone ahead to demean India and defame Hindus of India.” Patra told media.
