Shivraj Singh Chouhan Proves Majority, Congress MLAs Stay Absent

With 107 MLAs of his own Party, Chouhan enjoys the support of total 112 MLAs, including those from SP, BSP and Independent MLAs.

Bhopal| BJP senior leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan is all set to take over a Chief Minister for the fourth term after he comfortably proved the majority in trust vote today.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan needed the support of 104 MLAs to prove his majority after 22 MLAs from Congress resigned. Shivraj had his own 107 party MLAs. He was also supported by Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, and Independent MLAs taking the total number to 112.

While the BJP swept the trust vote, no Congress MLAs were present for the voting in state assembly.

The arrival of Chouhan on the chair of Chief Minister is a result of long drama that unfolded in the last one month. Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia switched parties and joined BJP ending his decades-old alliance with Congress Party. With Scindia, 22 other MLAs from Congress resigned from the assembly who were in support of Scindia.

The MLAs from both parties were shifted to different locations amid the drama. Congress accused BJP of abducting its MLAs and holing them up in Bengaluru.

As Congress leaders such as Digvijaya Singh, Jitu Patwari tried to contact and meet the holed up MLAs in Bengaluru, the MP assembly speaker sat on the resignations of the MLAs.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other MLAs had knocked the door of the Supreme court requesting an immediate floor test in assembly. The SC ordered a floor test, but Kamal Nath resigned as Chief Minister before the floor test clearing the way for Shivraj to become CM of the state for fourth time.

After Kamal Nath’s resignation, Shivraj Singh Chouhan was sworn in as a Chief Minister on Monday. Today he had to prove his majority and win the trust vote, which he comfortably did.
