Rajya Sabha defeat should not be considered as lack of opposition unity: Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi | United People Alliance (UPA) chairman Sonia Gandhi on Thursday stated that the defeat of BK Hariprasad for the post of deputy chairman in Rajya Sabha is not be considered as the lack of unity in the opposition.

Speaking to reporters Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi said, “Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose.” However, when media reporters asked whether the Opposition unity was falling apart, Gandhi replied, “No…why?”

Earlier today Janta Dal-United Rajya Sabha MP and NDA’s candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh was declared as the new Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha. Singh got 125 votes out of 332 votes while his opponent and Congress MP BK Hariprasad got 105 votes. Parties like YSRCP, Aam Aadmi Party and PDP were absent from the voting procedure. The JD(U) MP got support from NDA allies like Shiv Sena, Akali Dal along with regional parties like AIADMK, BJD and TRS.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Singh on his appointment.”I congratulate Harivansh ji on behalf of the whole house. He has been blessed with the talent of writing. He was also a favourite of former PM Chandra Shekhar ji,” said PM Modi.
