Subramanian Swamy backs UP minister’s proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayag

New Delhi | Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy today backed the proposal of Uttar Pradesh Minister Sidhartnath Singh to rename the holy city of Allahabad as Prayag.

“When our Prime Minister Modi was the Chief Minister, he had sent a recommendation to the Centre saying that Ahmedabad should be renamed Karnavati. Today he is the Prime Minister, even in one go, he can change the name. Why is he not doing that,” Swamy told media urging PM Modi’s intervention in the issue.

Earlier Uttar Pradesh Minister Sidhartnath Singh wrote to Governor Ram Naik for renaming Allahabad as Prayag, ahead of the Kumbh Mela here next year. Prayag is a holy place in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad which will be hosting the Kumbh Mela next year in 2019.

The BJP leader also demanded that the names associated with Mughals and Britishers should be changed and old names to be brought back,
