No trust vote today as Karnataka assembly adjourns

The BJP delegation also met Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala earlier in the day. After the meeting, the governor urged the Speaker to consider a vote by today itself.

Bengaluru| Karnataka Chief Minister Kumaraswamy heaved a sigh of relief as the assembly did not go for a trust vote today. However, the trust vote has been delayed only for a day. The house was adjourned today but the proceedings will continue tomorrow.

While the adjournment has delayed the decision on Congress-JDS coalition govt’s fate, the BJP has called it another stalling tactic. The BJP delegation also met Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala earlier in the day. After the meeting, the governor urged the Speaker to consider a vote by today itself. BJP state chief BS Yeddyurappa said the BJP MLAs are ready to wait till midnight. However, to protest against this, BJP has decided to put up its lawmakers in the assembly overnight to protest.

Addressing the assembly HD Kumaraswamy said that the speaker is being pressurized by some legislators. He said, “I havenā€™t come just because there is a question on whether I can run a coalition government or not. Events have shown that even the role of the Speaker has been put under jeopardy by some legislators.”

In the last few weeks 16 MLAs ā€” 13 from the Congress and three from JD(S) ā€” have resigned, two independent MLAs S Shankar and H Nagesh have withdrawn their support to the coalition government.

The ruling coalitionā€™s strength in the House is 117ā€“ Congress 78, JD(S) 37, BSP 1, and nominated 1, besides the Speaker. With the support of the two independents, the opposition BJP has 107 MLAs in the 225-member House, including the nominated MLA and Speaker.

If the resignations of the 16 MLAs are accepted or if they are not present in the House, the ruling coalitionā€™s tally will be reduced to 101.
