Tamil Nadu CM to meet families of Thoothukudi police firing victims

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E.K Palaniswami is scheduled to visit the families of the injured and those who got killed in the police firing during the anti-Sterlite protest in Thoothukudi on June 9.

Earlier film star Vijay, actor turned politician Rajnikanth and Kamala Hasan also visit the families in the hospital along with various opposition leaders of Tamil Nadu. Both Rajnikanth and Vijay announced compensation worth 1 lakh and 2 lakh respectively to the families of the victim.

Around 13 people were killed and more than 60 were injured in the police firing against the locals who were protesting against the construction of a new smelter plant by Sterlite copper mining Industries in Thoothukudi. The locals claimed that the Sterlite copper mining Industry was polluting groundwater, and was hazardous for the environment.
